Phenelzine – Treatment for Depression and Anxiety Disorders
What is Phenelzine?
Phenelzine is a prescription antidepressant that belongs to a class of medicines known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). It’s primarily used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD), especially when other antidepressants have not been effective.
It may also be prescribed for certain anxiety disorders and atypical depression, where symptoms include mood swings, fatigue, and oversleeping.
How Does Phenelzine Work?
Phenelzine works by blocking the activity of an enzyme called monoamine oxidase, which breaks down key brain chemicals such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine.
By preventing their breakdown, Phenelzine helps increase the levels of these neurotransmitters, improving mood, reducing anxiety, and restoring emotional balance.
Who Should Not Use Phenelzine?
Do not take Phenelzine if you:
-
Are allergic to phenelzine or any of its ingredients.
-
Are taking or have recently taken other antidepressants, particularly SSRIs, SNRIs, or TCAs.
-
Have liver disease, heart failure, pheochromocytoma, or high blood pressure.
-
Are under 16 years old unless prescribed by a specialist.
Always consult your doctor before use, especially if you have epilepsy, diabetes, thyroid problems, or a history of mental health conditions such as bipolar disorder.
Possible Side Effects
Phenelzine can cause side effects, especially during the first few weeks of treatment. Common side effects include:
-
Drowsiness or dizziness
-
Dry mouth
-
Constipation
-
Blurred vision
-
Insomnia
-
Weight gain
Serious side effects may include severe headaches, rapid heartbeat, chest pain, confusion, or high blood pressure reactions (especially after eating certain foods — see below). Seek immediate medical attention if these occur.
Important Dietary Precautions
Because Phenelzine is an MAOI, you must avoid foods high in tyramine, as they can cause a dangerous increase in blood pressure.
Avoid foods such as:
-
Mature or aged cheeses
-
Cured meats, salami, or sausages
-
Fermented or pickled foods
-
Soy products (e.g. soy sauce, tofu)
-
Alcoholic drinks, especially red wine and beer
Your doctor or pharmacist will provide a full list of foods and beverages to avoid during treatment.
Precautions and Interactions
Before taking Phenelzine, tell your healthcare provider if you:
-
Are pregnant or breastfeeding
-
Take any other prescription, over-the-counter, or herbal medications
-
Consume caffeine or alcohol regularly
Do not start or stop any other medication without consulting your doctor, as serious interactions may occur.
