Buspirone – Treatment for Anxiety Disorders

What is Buspirone?
Buspirone is a prescription medication used to treat generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and related anxiety symptoms such as irritability, tension, and restlessness.
Unlike benzodiazepines, Buspirone does not cause significant drowsiness or dependency, making it suitable for longer-term use in managing anxiety.

How Does Buspirone Work?
Buspirone works by affecting the levels of serotonin and dopamine, two key neurotransmitters involved in mood regulation.
It balances brain activity to reduce excessive anxiety and promote a sense of calm without strong sedative effects.
Unlike sedatives, it may take a few weeks for the full therapeutic effects to develop.

Who Should Not Use Buspirone?
Do not take Buspirone if you:

• Are allergic to buspirone or any of its ingredients.

• Have taken monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) such as phenelzine or selegiline within the past 14 days.

• Have severe liver or kidney impairment.

Consult your doctor before use if you have a history of mental health conditions, seizures, or substance use.

Possible Side Effects
Buspirone is generally well tolerated, but some people may experience mild side effects such as:

• Dizziness or light-headedness

• Headache

• Nausea or upset stomach

• Nervousness or restlessness

• Take antidepressants, anticonvulsants, sedatives, or herbal supplements

• Consume grapefruit or grapefruit juice, as it can affect how the medication works

Avoid drinking alcohol, as it can increase dizziness and impair coordination.
